Different Hand Positions for Cleans vs. Jerks?
I personally prefer a pretty wide grip for cleans; much wider than my jerk grip.
Shouldn’t they be the same? They often are but definitely don’t have to be. I personally start wide for the clean and my hands slide in for my jerk.
Others do the exact opposite starting narrow for their clean and widening for their jerk. Either is fine and ultimately you’ll have to figure out what is the most comfortable (read: what helps you lift the most) for you.
On a different note, when those new to weightlifting try to jerk for the first time their timing (understandably) is a bit off. In addition to the errors I pointed out on past videos two mistakes some make is to dip too slow and too low.
A short, sharp dip that gets the bar to bend a little bit before driving hard (jumping) to spring the weight overhead is what we are looking for.
Leave comments below and let me know what you think of the videos and if there’s something specifically you’d like to cover in a future video!
See ya tomorrow,
Doug
